Giulio Candussio was born in Paularo – Udine on September 3rd, 1945 and lives in Spilimbergo in the province of Pordenone. He attended the mosaic school in Friuli and his artistic training was self experience. Since the early years of study he matures his own, autonomous conception of mosaic, characterized by the need for constant testing of materials and techniques, which is opposite to the artisanal dimension that mosaic masters traditionally operate. The path of a personal aesthetic research, however comes from painting since the 60s and takes the form of a continuous period of exhibition activity which still continues. In 1980 he became the art director of ‘Bisazza Spa, starting in the company the experimentation and research. He also coordinated the realization of challenging mosaics from sketches of contemporary artists, such as , most recently, Hoffmann, Hopkins, Tadini, Sabonet, Mendini and Pozzati. Particularly important was the realization of the mosaic for the Tottenham Court Road underground station in London, designed by Eduardo Paolozzi (1983). During these years he also was a pioneer for the application of computer graphics and multimedia technologies to mosaics. Among the most significant jobs we must remember the decoration of the Bisazza headquarters at that time in Spilimbergo (PN) which were made by expanding to architectural scale a ten meter painting  of Piero Dorazio (1989). When meeting the art of Dorazio , he changes the path of his painting which in this period is characterized by a cooling of the forms and the research of new strokes in color, it becomes more shrill and artificial, it’s been implemented through the adoption of a minimum iterated graphic sign on the canvas which  has many similarities with the mosaic tile. In 1994 he joined  the mosaic school of Friuli as a teacher and, in 1999, as a member of the Scientific and Technical Committee, directs educational programming. From 2004 he becomes the artistic director of the school. His presence at the school in Spilimbergo through the years contributes profoundly to the process of renewal and redevelopment. Personal research and teaching experience is actually a combination in the process of organic verification of the expressive possibilities of the mosaic, conducted from the revaluation of the old technique, and culminate in large mosaic made in the 90’s. These techniques are necessary to the strong spatial meaning and vitality of the mosaic texture, obtained through a process of progressive simplification and purification of the sign. large work was carried out in 2002 at the Fiat Research Centre in Turin in a context of Art-Park. A further important project that deserves mention is surely the manufacture of a panel of 37 mt. length by 4 mt. in height. Iridescent Lightning is designed for the city of New York, the new Temporary station of the World Trade Center Path Station subway. Iridescent Lightning is an explosion of colors,  symbol of energy and perspective on the future. In recent years he was the art director at Trend S.p.A. of Vicenza. For Mosaic + S.p.A. was in charge of research and developement applied to all areas of the mosaic. In 2011 he participates with a mosaic to the Moscow Biennale Of Contemporary Art. From this moment, he decides to devote himself entirely to the work of artist. In painting again, after having already worked out artistic modern solutions, the various precursors and pioneers of ‘abstraction. Candussio wants to replace the conventional painting and, therefore also makes use of media and traditional materials, this means that the color is joining the support to produce a chromatic object, its structures form a “stand-alone” object, independently of what’s the material of the support ; its color / painted surfaces are the new expression of his subjectivity and his personality. In 2013 Arch. Giovanni Caprioglio has a project of a large-scale floor decoration in the public square Candiani in Mestre, so together with his son Arch. Antonio Candussio, he is called to make the realization of this work. Their starting point is the traditional Mosaic pavement that is combined with the new technologies and computer graphics. They realize the design for a total surface of 1800 square meters using marble, granite and Venetian enamels. After this project he starts carving wood and produced his first “Surface” and the first “Plastics Forms”. In 2014 he is invited to the “INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE PRIZE VIVA” of CAORLE where he makes a sculpture on the huge stone facing the sea.
